Pioneering Treatment:
"Doc–I can’t Burp!"

Once considered an untreatable condition, the inability to burp has been identified as a hallmark sign of a newly diagnosed condition, Retrograde Cricopharyngeal Dysfunction (RCPD). As one of the pioneering physicians in addressing this recently discovered condition, Dr. Sunil Verma and his team at the University Voice and Swallowing Center have successfully treated hundreds who had struggled for years to find a solution to their debilitating symptoms.

RCPD poses a unique set of challenges for individuals, and many of our patients had endured years of frustration, unable to find a physician who could provide the specialized care they desperately needed.

Here at UCI Health, we have been treating patients with this condition for over five years by injecting Botox into the Upper Esophageal Sphincter (UES). We are proud to report an initial success rate of over 95% and have achieved remarkable and long-lasting results of over 85% as well.
